Antal Plank

Antal Plank (b. 1984, Budapest) is a Hungarian sculptor and Head of the Stone and Wood Sculpture Workshop at the Sculpture Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, where he also teaches as a senior lecturer. He graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2012, having studied under Pál Kő, Zoltán Karmó, and Géza Sallai. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions, symposia, and artist residencies in Hungary and abroad, while his public sculptures can be found in Budapest and several other cities across Hungary.

Plank's sculptural practice emerges from the intersection of geometric construction and organic form. His steel sculptures evoke crystalline structures, botanical growth, and animal forms while remaining firmly rooted in abstraction. His visual language has been shaped by the structural logic of origami as well as the formal vocabulary of graffiti, resulting in a distinctive synthesis of precision and spontaneity.

In recent years, Plank has focused primarily on sculptures constructed from folded steel plates. Sharp edges, planar surfaces, and angular intersections generate dynamic compositions that reveal new spatial relationships from every viewpoint. His vibrant use of colour is not merely decorative but forms an integral part of each sculpture's spatial structure, amplifying its rhythm and visual energy.

Throughout his work, seemingly opposing qualities—mass and lightness, stability and movement, organic growth and geometric order—exist in a state of delicate equilibrium. Despite their filigree construction, his sculptures possess a powerful spatial presence, encouraging viewers to move around them and continually discover new perspectives.
