Balázs Kontúr

Balázs Kontur (b. 1982, Budapest) is a Hungarian visual artist and architect. He studied architecture at the Ybl Miklós College of Architecture in Budapest and later at Vitus Bering University in Denmark, where architect Jenő Kapy had a lasting influence on his professional outlook. Between 2006 and 2011, he attended the Szerencs Art School led by János Fajó, where he embraced the principles of Pure Form, a tradition that continues to inform his artistic practice. Following his career in architecture, Kontur gradually shifted his focus to contemporary art, spending several years in Italy before becoming a founding member and artistic director of K28 Gallery in Budapest in 2016.

At the core of Kontur's practice is an exploration of the relationships between space, place, and perception. His work brings together the traditions of geometric abstraction and Pure Form with an architectural mode of thinking, in which geometry functions not merely as a compositional device but as a means of investigating spatial experience and human presence.

His paintings and objects are structured through rigorous geometric systems that are animated by the subtle irregularities of hand-drawn lines and the material behaviour of paint. These slight deviations within otherwise ordered structures generate secondary visual patterns, revealing a delicate balance between order and contingency, control and intuition.

Rather than existing as static compositions, Kontur's geometric structures create perceptual spaces that are activated through the viewer's experience. Within his visual language, black and gold function not as colours but as symbolic manifestations of darkness and light. Gold, in particular, with its reflective surface, establishes a dynamic relationship between the artwork, the surrounding space, and the viewer, uniting them within a single perceptual field.
